EE1 (2022-)
Proposed Material: birchwood, titular fungus, low-resistance polyurethane foam, audio speaker components, LED lighting, PVC scrim
The EE series is a collection of experiences, each exemplifying a single emotion. The series studies how the body processes feelings; bodily versus mental memory; and ways in which you can release emotions from the body.
By examining principles and theories from ergonomics, ideas around chakras, stress positions, color theory, audio therapies, architecture, and beyond, each experience is crafted to sooth the mind and ego so the individual can fully experience the specific emotion, safely being overwhelmed by it.
The first experience explores grief. Because of the sensitive nature of grief, the context of this experience is a room as to keep unexpected disruptions to a minimum. Taking inspiration from light artists, like James Turrell and Thomas Wilfred; manual alignment therapy; parent-child bonding; and beyond, the room creates a space to bask in grief.
Upon stepping down into the room from the door, focus is immediately concenrated on the lace-colored, foam area embedded into the floor. This middle space, covered in a plant-based shearling, has indentations that algin with the body’s curve when curled on one’s side for the participant to rest upon.
Encircling the resting place are speakers, with wide ports at the bottom to release more air into the space and make lower tones more pronounced. As audio plays it ungulfs the participant.
Natural light from the shifts in color with a sheer scrim diffusing the tone as is envelops the space.
