SS2

(482 wires, wood, fishing line, aluminum)

Each piece contain a specific amount of wires, tied together by clear string hung, across a rod suspended between two pieces of wood. Each bushel consists of a certain number of wires, correlating to the number of layers, different instruments or sounds, occuring in a four-count period. To create the length of each wire within a bunch, the root-mean-square amplitude in each four-second period was divided by how many layers are in each four-beat period; each wire represents a fraction, translated 1:1 from decibels to inches, of the average amplitude over that time period.

The project further explores digitally-edited music’s emotional effect on the listener. The comparison between FKA twigs’ “Pendulum” and RiFF RAFF’s “Dolce & Gabbana” was made because the experience each artist desire is distinct. twigs speaks of a singular person, her lover, and their emotional bond, while RiFF RAFF addresses a general audience about how he only “fucks with girls who wear Dolce & Gabbana.” Each piece takes the songs out of their home audio context , forcing the audience to build a new relationship with each song and re-evaluate their emotional reaction to music.
